BBC GCSE Bitesize Launches

The BBC are leading the way in providing innovative learning resources for students. The revamped GCSE Bitesize website responds to the changing needs and behaviours of GCSE students.

The BBC appointed Playgroup to re-architect the site in response to the usability study that was completed by expert partners Bunnyfoot. The whole site was engineered to best engage students with the online revision materials and to improve their concentration.

Organisation of the vast amount of content was key, along with the BBC, the concept of 'building blocks' (content modules) was developed. This building block structure allowed customised display of different content types which varied dramatically by subject. This allowed flexibility rather than being restricted to a standard set of page templates.

The site hosts interactive content including video and audio materials, again responding to the changing way that students want to interact and learn. Students can now download audio material to their mp3 player and therefore absorb information on the move.

The carefully considered information design is complimented by a bold brand refresh and revamp of the entire look and feel for GCSE Bitesize. This was implemented while also carefully maintaining the impact and positivity felt towards the existing branding.

The new site is in place for those keen students revising as soon as term starts, but the first huge wave of traffic is expected November to January in preparation for the first set of exams in the new year.

Jemma Summerfield, Producer, BBC Schools Online commented:

"The GCSE Bitesize website has been positively uplifted by the fresh modern designs provided by Playgroup. Our new homepage clearly promotes the diverse rich media content we offer and the revision bite pages have been massively improved by the new range of 'building block' design elements. We're very happy with the finished product and believe our audience will benefit from a more engaging, interactive experience."

Tim Moore, Head of Creative Services at Playgroup said

"We are really pleased with the finished result. The BBC are definitely taking the lead when it comes to delivering forward thinking learning resources for GCSE students. GCSE Bitesize has come a long way since its launch in 1998, with the website as the core driver of the service, we feel the new site will make a real positive impact on the way that students learn."
