Does your site have 'mojo'?

07 Apr

Mojo is mobile journalism and the idea is simple; you have a set of mobile accessories allowing you to cover any event live, using a mobile phone. Take a look at the site Reuters Mojo and you will see some of the best raw news stories and materials reported by Reuters reporters worldwide during the Mobile Journalism trial. The journalist used something called the Mobile Journalism Toolkit (quite interesting as it is just a collection of standard accessories), but more importantly the concept of 'mojo' could be applied to much more than just journalism. Hopefully we here at Playgroup soon can upload some of our mobile social networking experiments and we can trigger some further exploration of the possibilities available.

The sites below are good starting points if you would like to explore this further:

Interesting concept, given that (as you say) all you need are some regular accessories. Certainly makes it cheaper (and more 'mobile') than having a video camera and laptop. With increased mobile technology this could become pretty popular.

I'm amazed by the amount of people who use Facebook on their mobiles these days, so I imagine Shozu becoming more and more popular - especially with it coming already installed on several handsets.

Yup, the fact that you can get Shozu on the iPhone does mean you have quite a powerful combination already. I can't wait to see what they develop using the iPhone 2 SDK, I bet we will get some quite advanced mobile publishing tools, as the iPhone supports QuickTime.

It's a nice idea, there are 2 drawbacks I can think of though: battery life on mobile devices and communication protocols.

Battery life is still bad on pretty much all mobile devices and it has been a problem for some time. It is one of the biggest challenges facing hardware manufacturers in my mind; you can't have feature rich handsets and then no power to use them after a couple of hours usage.

Secondly transfer of data is a real issue. Using WiFi is great but getting a massive bill from your mobile network provider because you've used too much data on their network is ridiculous. This will be less of an issue if we can get WiFi everywhere obviously.
