Having worked at Playgroup now for just 5 days and 3 hours, my role has so far been to understand the industry and what “we” do. I like to think I’m slowly getting my head around it all! But one thing that I have taken on board more than anything is the role of play.
With this at mind, I have been trying to observe the role that “play” has in our everyday lives, and this is my conclusion;
With every new invention, our lives are made a little easier and it takes gradually less brain power to run them. Take the iPhone, it’s a truly genius piece of kit with almost limitless applications. I even found an app recently that lets you find a rental car, beep its horn, lock/unlock it and potentially start the engine (http://www.usatoday.com/unlock-iphone-zipcar-tech). But, as much as I love it and can’t put it down, it may be taking over my life. I rely on it so much for directions, for entertainment, for communicating (obviously), but I wonder if this is a good thing. Have I lost my interaction with the real world? Anyway before this gets too deep and I go off track, my point is that “play” seems to be getting more and more rare. The world seems busier than ever with everyone trying to compete to be top dog. Not that this is a bad thing, but there’s a balance. Play is so important and to understand why, you can refer to almost every single one of our blogs.
As a result of my observation, I had a fantastic weekend, filled with lots of playtime and I know I will remember it more than those weekends when I was trying to do a million and one things. I also discovered a fantastic restaurant in Hoxton called the Breakfast Club which truly does the best breakfasts ever (you can get directions to it by using the “Maps” app on your iPhone).

It’s probably a good thing that I’ve been sold into the importance of Play as it is now my role as Sales Exec to sell this concept to others. Anyone interested?
Maybe I should stop blabbering on and get back to work, I still have the company database and system to get my head around (although I think that may take a little longer than 1 week!)! Not helped by the fact that there is something wrong with my computer. Mike is convinced that I am radioactive as everything I touch is slowly breaking. If he carries on I might just work my magic on his iPhone, although from my argument that could do some good.
